Stilwell’s Mikey Sawney-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by Stuteville Ford

His first varsity touchdown gave Stilwell’s Mikey Sawney a moment he could trace back through every practice and repetition.

“Scoring my first varsity touchdown is something I’ll always remember,” Sawney said. “It showed me that all the work, practice and preparation can turn into something special on the field.”

Sawney plays football and baseball, but football has shaped how he handles difficult moments away from competition. He has learned that progress often depends on what a player does after the excitement fades and the work becomes hard.

“Football has taught me discipline, toughness and the importance of staying committed when things get hard,” Sawney said. “There are going to be tough days, but if you keep working and don’t give up, the hard work will eventually pay off.”

That approach is reinforced by Coach Derek Carter, who holds Sawney accountable in the classroom while helping prepare him for life beyond high school. Teammate Brayton Carter has also shown him what it looks like to set ambitious goals and pursue them.

One line stays with Sawney: “Somewhere he is out there training while I am not, and when we meet, he will win.”

The message pushes him toward the extra work nobody sees. It also influences how he treats younger players. Sawney volunteers with a youth football group, hoping to become someone those athletes can trust and emulate.

Away from the field, he enjoys spending time with friends in Stilwell. Those quieter moments still matter, but so does the support awaiting him at home. Sawney credits God for his opportunities and his family for believing in him.

“I’m still just getting started,” Sawney said. “I want to keep improving every day, compete at the highest level I can, and see how far my hard work can take me.”
