Stilwell’s Adrianna Chronister – Wrestling Spotlight – Presented by Stuteville Ford of Tahlequah

ADRIANNA CHRONISTER

STILWELL HIGH SCHOOL

Although Stilwell senior Adrianna Chronister has accomplished a lot in her wrestling career, there is one prize she’s focused on this year and that’s winning a state championship. Her career started at Maryetta; a K-8 school outside Stilwell.

“When I was little my dad put me and my brother Jaston into some martial arts classes. Then Jaston started wrestling at Maryetta and I thought that looked cool and so I started there too. But having to wrestle guys all the time sucked so I stopped for a couple of years. Then I heard that Stilwell was going to start a high school girls’ wrestling program, so I got back into the sport in eighth grade.”

Once she got into high school, things really took off for Adrianna. She qualified for the state tournament her freshman and sophomore years and was a state runner-up last year. At this writing, she has 117 career wins and became a double All American over the holidays with two big tournament wins and is ranked number one in the state in the 140-pound weight class.

“I like the hard work associated with wrestling which motives me to get better and then seeing it pay off when I win these big tournaments. This year I’ve decided to become more aggressive on the mat. In the past I’ve been pretty passive about winning or losing but this year I’m more determined to attack and take what I want which includes a state championship.”

Besides wrestling at school, Adrianna is president of Girls Up and is in the National Honor Society. In the summers she does freestyle wrestling, which is the style in college, in Sallisaw. So what’s after high school look like for this standout wrestler?

“Female wrestling is just in its infancy in colleges,” explained her coach, Chris Henry. “There are only abut 15 big schools that offer it and here in Oklahoma it’s limited to OCU and a few junior colleges.”

Adrianna would like to continue wrestling at the next level and has had some discussions with schools about that and one day become a veterinarian and have her own clinic.
